1 for 1. It was the right decision. Sure I could’ve found a Mustang in similar shape/condition but why would I want that? Besides, there’s already 2 of them in my region running RallyX. Gotta be different.
I’m thinking car #302 for the engine size. I normally use 562 for everything...but it might be time to change.

Haha, there are a lot of Capri front end designs that have lower front bumpers. I actively avoided them.
This takes the heft wheel arches to the extreme though!

Roughly the same cost. to just clear it up, I paid 3k for the Capri. It was listed at 3500. That came with upgraded exhaust, carb/intake, strut tower/firewall brace and frame ties. Oh, and no rust. I saw mustangs in similar shape common similar mods for around the same price. biggest benefit would’ve been getting a newer one with fuel injection but I don’t think it’ll be a huge issue and I could always swap down the line.
I also wanted to be pre-1991. I registered as historic because it won’t be a daily driver and will only be driven to and from special events...not my fault they didn’t specify racing couldn’t be considered a special event LOL

Excuse my lack of knowledge, but what weather do you get in the winter? As in, what tires are you planning to use?
If you get any snow/ice, the tires will be the determining factor in the result, not power or suspension or anything else.
Also, does it have a limited slip diff? That’s probably the first thing to get if you don’t have it.
On a completely unrelated note, have you tried drivetribe yet? I’ve set up a tribe especially for those who occasionally race themselves, to make it easier to follow each other’s progress and event recaps :)

No problem on the lack of knowledge, I have no idea what you expect for weather over there, so that’s all fair.
Definite snow and ice. All my racing will be on dirt, mud, or snow. There is zero change I race on pavement of any kind. So I’ll be planning on a set of snow tires, or if I can find some gravel tire take offs used I’d grab those. I intend to drive on the current wheels/tires to and from the course and swap on location.
It does in fact have a factory limited slip!!!! From 1982!!! So my intention is to run the stock rear axle for a season or two (depending on it’s durability of course!) then upgrade the whole rear diff/axles to an 8.8 inch rear with an upgrade to 5 lug, as it’s only 4. I hear I can find any mid to late 90's Mustang and rip the whole rear axle assembly off and bolt it onto my car. That gets me rear disc brakes, the 5 lug, and an upgraded diff. I have to wait a bit for this upgrade due to costs. Not only will I need to upgrade the rear, but the front as well.....and that means I need 2 new sets of wheels and possible tires at that point. I have a 3 year old and another on the way so I can’t drop all the money at once!
I’ve never heard of drivetribe! I’ve only heard of wheelwell. I’ll check it out!

Oh I have no interest in getting rid of the turbines. I need a secondary set of wheels/tires. Plan is to drive myself to events on the above wheels/tires then swap at the course for the “winter” aka “Rally” set. They actually look better than the above picture shows. I’ll keep the Eagle One product in mind though!
Someone local just offered me another set of turbines but I’m not sure about the price and they need tires. Someone has a set on craigslist near by of the typical 4 lug “pony wheels” for less money and they have winter tires on them (not great ones but better than nothing).
I actually wish it was a bubble back, but mainly because I like oddities and love Mercury.

Age of the LSD is not important as long as it works :)
Don’t worry about having to buy 2 sets of wheels, that’s just the beginning. I have 7 sets of wheels for my E36, and probably could use a few more to cover everything :D
When it comes to tires, especially if you’re going to use them in ice/snow, I’d suggest giving retread tires a shot - they are typically cheap, and have ridiculously soft compounds, meaning that you’ll leave all the fancy nokian-clad racers scratching their heads about how the heck can a Mercury beat them so badly.
If that fails, those same Nokian tires are a good way to go - hakka series (probably the R2 model) for when it is really cold, and WRD4 for when it is near 32F, as it’s good in the wet and competent in wintry conditions as well.

Oh I know the age didn’t matter just threw in the age because I thought it was cool they actually included it in 1982.
Interesting idea on the re-treads. I didn’t think about those. Was just going to look for used to save cash. I’ll look into it, thanks!
I’ve got a few guys from the RallyX group here around Detroit giving me some tips on how to prep it for Rally.

Ooh, one very important thing when it comes to winter tires - their age is really important. A typical winter tire will be pretty much useless (for racing) after around 3 years.
I’d definitely try and get new tires. Have a look at some retreads (and keep in mind that if you do find really soft ones, they will be terrible on the road and you’ll likely be unable to balance the tires. Not that you should balance winter racing tires anyways) if you can’t afford a completely new set

There are actually guys running in our group that are on 6 and 7 year old winter tires that they bought new. They only run them at the course to save on them and keep them stored inside when not in use, so it helps.
It all comes down to budget, this is definitely a budget racing endeavor and if I don’t have cash for fixes and new tires....it’ll sit. I can’t take budget away from anywhere else for this (unfortunately).
Will Race For Food
> MontegoMan562 is a Capri RS Owner

If you keep the tires stored inside in the warmth, it might help, but a 6 year old tire will never be as good as a new one, the compound just can’t remain effective for that long, at least when it comes to regular winter tires. There are some exceptions when it comes to tires made specifically for racing, but that’s going a bit off topic.
Regardless of what anyone says, never buy winter tires that are more than 3 years old, especially for racing. No matter how they are stored, you can likely find a new tire (from a lesser/cheaper brand) that will have at least as much grip

Oh, in addition to my comment (which, since this is Kinja, I believe will show up below this one) - don’t look at the Nokians or Bridgestones when buying tires, there are some cheaper brand tires that will be more than competitive as well. Heck, I can try and help you find something if we figure out what conditions you can expect in wintertime there (approx. temperature range and amount of snow/ice). However, instead of a very long stream of comments here, we could make an equally long string of comments on drivetribe as that would be relevant to the tribe I’ve created :D

If I could get in I would be chatting on drivetribe!
I’m eying up some General Altimax Arctic’s, they’re very popular around here for using a winter tire. The temp range is going to be massive because I’ll be running the “winter” tire in the summer at events as well. The January or February race it will likely be below 10 (Fahrenheit) or -12 to -17 (Celsius). In the summer it could be all the way up to 90+ (F) or mid 30's (C). It seems like the Altimax Arctics and the Firestone Winterforce are the most popular in our region to run year round (racing only of course, anyone who drives to the track does a swap when they get there).

Keep an eye out here on oppo, people occasionally give out drivetribe invites - saw two posts like that yesterday.
As for the tires - do you run on 100% gravel in the summer? That would be the only place where a winter tire could be even remotely competitive.
What is the typical track surface in the winter? Do you maybe have an onboard video (from someone else, presumably) from past winters to get a feel for the conditions?

I think they want to make 100% sure no cop or insurance company is going to keep someone from being able to go to the cruise for any reason.
Last thing they need is the publicity that a Cop impounded someone’s car for driving it to dinner during the cruise or some similar some such.

Ha, i never had any issues while driving the Montego around. Even with taking it to work on occasion. Cops really just do not care about historic plates around here. I may get some attention driving it in the snow to an event. But it’ll be going directly to and from a special event so I doubt I’ll get any trouble over it. If it ends up being an issue, I’ll reconsider.

Yeah they aren’t my first choice either. but for 100 bucks I can’t say no.
And the plan is to upgrade to 5 lug and an 8.8 rear with new axles at some point, maybe next summer, but definitely sooner than later, so I don’t want to invest in a really nice set of 4 lug’s when I fully intend to change the car so that 4 lugs won’t work anymore.
With the upgrade to 5 lugs I’m going to have to buy 2 more sets of wheels with the new axles. It also means swapping the front axles because 5 lug rear and 4 lug front is all kinds of silly.
